Fandom: Haikyuu!!
Title: bystander
Pairing/Character Focus: Ennoshita Chikara/Futakuchi Kenji
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] harklights
What makes this a gem: You know when a fic leaves such a lasting impression on you that it gives you chills each time you reread it? This is one of those fics. Playing off Ennoshita's canonical interest in film, this fic takes it to the next level and makes him an art student and filmmaker, with Futakuchi simply someone who's wandered off the street and into his exhibition. The ensuing conversation between two people who've just met is one of the most powerful pieces of dialogue I've ever read, full stop. It's intelligent without being too academic, challenging without being overwhelming. Just... really clever writing.

Title: Riptides
Pairing/Character Focus: Tsukishima Kei/Yamaguchi Tadashi
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Kuleshov
What makes this a gem: Some stories leave you with a strong impression, and this is one of them. It does so in all the requisite ways for a great story—with characterisation, relationship development, lovely writing—but stands out particularly with its incredibly strong atmosphere. This fic is fondly reminiscent of long summer days and the will-they-won't-they of a new romance, with a strong cast of supporting characters and OCs to make it feel multilayered and rich. There's also a bit of an air of mystery, as it's the author's only fic, so I feel like I really treasure it all the more for knowing that. Hopefully, this is the kind of fic that will warm its way into your heart, too.

Title: a devil dog in baggy pants
Pairing/Character Focus: ray person
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] buffyaddict13
What makes this a gem:

Josh Ray Person is a US Marine. He thinks he knows what war is. He thinks he knows what friendship means. He thinks there’s no such as time travel. Ray is about to find out he’s wrong on all three counts.

a devil dog in baggy pants is a time-travel, body-switch, crossover between generation kill and band of brothers. and it's done so beautifully.

ray is literally thrown from his war in iraq into the d-day landing of world war two. we travel with ray as he tries to navigate his way around a war that's already over, with people who are mostly already gone, while trying to get back to bravo company and the people he left behind. it's an emotional journey, with frustrations and fears and heartbreak as ray grows attached to the men of easy company.

[archiveofourown.org profile] buffyaddict13 does an amazing job of narrating the parallels of wars 60 years apart while capturing not only ray's personality, but the men of easy company.

knowledge of band of brothers isn't necessary, but there are nods to the canon that would be better appreciated with experience of both miniseries.

Fandom: Yuri!!! On Ice
Title: Without fear, without metaphor
Pairing/Character Focus: Yuuri Katsuki/Viktor Nikiforov
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] reginar
What makes this a gem: One of the most interesting facets of Yuuri and Viktor's relationship is the cultural and language barrier, yet there are so few fics that explore it. This is my favourite of the lot. Although a work in progress, what's been posted thus far is both tender and full of tension, an expert exploration of what words mean in this relationship. The writing is lush and accompanied each chapter by art, which ranges from beautiful digital paintings to humourous photomanips. This is a highly literate work which tackles themes of miscommunication in a mature and engaging manner, and worth the time and attention of a good, close read.

Title: come morning light
Pairing/Character Focus: walt hasser/ray person; walt hasser
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] sephirothflame
What makes this a gem:

Ray is chosen as the Tribute from District 11. He's not the only one going through Hell.

come morning light is a hunger games au that looks at the arena games from the point of view of someone who doesn’t get chosen at the reaping. we get to see the reality of those left behind — their guilt, their attempts at carrying on as if everything is normal, their anger at how such brutality has become normalized, and their frustration at being used for entertainment by the elite.

i love walt and ray’s relationship in this; even in what little we hear from ray, there’s obviously a strong bond between the two.

[archiveofourown.org profile] sephirothflame really captures walt’s fear and worry as he waits for ray to return home. so much so, that the reader is pulled along on an emotional ride: stressing out with walt, crying with walt, and trying not to be too hopeful as we all watch the games unfold from a distance.

Title: you make my heart beat (faster)
Pairing: Kim Seokjin | Jin/Min Yoongi | Suga
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] onyu
What Makes This A Gem: This is such a ride. onyu's writing is always a rollercoaster of emotions, flashbacks and intense moments of reality and self-doubt kicking her character's asses. Her characters are so complex and nuanced too, and it's a genuine pleasure to watch Yoongi and Seokjin stumble through love and the ad deal of their lives, and watch Seokjin figure out that what he wants is to be Creative, as well as be an advertisement salesman.

Title: tricks out of our sleeves
Pairing/Character Focus: slight Roronoa Zoro/Vinsmoke Sanji
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] bluewalk
What makes this a gem: This was such a great read! It was so well written, and really captured the depth and essence of Zoro and Sanji's relationship, be that platonic or romantic. The descriptive language really blew me away as well as the insight into both characters. A good read whether you like ZoSan or not!

Title: Audacity Is Its Own Reward
Pairing/Character Focus: Mila Babicheva/Sara Crispino
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] ineptshieldmaid
What makes this a gem: Perhaps I am biased, as this fic was a gift for me in the recent Rare Ships!!! On Ice exchange, and as such was quite literally tailored to my preferences, but I'm absolutely enamoured with everything about this, from the tone to the romance to the excellent cast of characters. The setting is Sydney, 1965, and great care has been taken with every historical detail, as well as the inclusion of several actual events at the time. This is also a different sport AU, and I'm sure you'll agree that the mental image of Mila and Sara in 60s-style tennis outfits is a pretty fantastic one. The story pays great attention to both of their cultural backgrounds and follows a sweet, developing romance with a lovely balance of funny and tender moments. I've picked up on a new detail each time I've read this fic, and to me, that's the mark of a real gem.

Pairing/Character Focus: Albus Severus Potter/Scorpius Malfoy
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] perculious
What makes this a gem: An oldie but a goodie like all of my AS/S recs will be, sorry. This is a kissing practice/lessons fic that's so delightfully written and has charm in every word! It's pining done right and also absolutely hilarious and I've loved this fic since 2011 and still do.

Title: Dwelling
Pairing/Character Focus: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] aideomai
What makes this a gem: So, I'm going to start this by saying I'm a sucker for AUs, especially canon-divergent ones! This fic both is and isn't an AU, which I would explain more of but... spoilers! I love the writing style that this author has, it makes all of the scenes feel natural but also high-tension in spots where it is needed. I particularly love the characterisation of Harry in this one - he's clearly affected by the war and all of the events leading up to it, and I feel as though the author's take on it is fresh and new. I love Ginny in this fic, I love Ron in this fic, I love Hermione in this fic and Draco, of course. Which is basically everyone! Quite a number of the interactions are both hilarious and heart-wrenching, but I'm also a big softie so that's quite possibly just me tearing up over here! Fair warning though, this fic is still a WIP, but the author has no plans on abandoning it, so please read and love and enjoy it because, quite frankly, it contains the writing that I would love to see more of in the HP fandom.

Title: Altschmerz
Pairing/Character Focus: Yuuri Katsuki/Viktor Nikiforov
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Liana_Legaspi
What makes this a gem: This fic was published relatively soon after the series ended and everyone was buzzing with speculation about what Yuuri's stay in Saint Petersburg would be like. Altschmerz first grabbed my attention with its unusual title, defined in the summary, and kept me engaged with its evocative writing and realistic, bittersweet depiction of Yuuri's POV, his anxiety, and his relationships, including some very wonderful friendship moments. Although ostensibly angsty, Altschmerz deals with the issues at hand in such a mature and respectful manner that I never once felt overly upset; rather, that I was in good hands. It's a big read for a one-shot, at 15k, but I couldn't stop once I'd started. In the time since it was posted I've read many other post-canon Saint Petersburg fics, but Altschmerz will always be the definitive take on it for me.
